Dubai, U.A.E.: The island of Tobago is known for its festivities surrounding the Easter Season each year. Paramount to these is the famous goat races, in which jockeys race alongside their charges in a quest to declare the swiftest of them all. This year, the Tobago House of Assembly’s Division of Tourism and Transportation will merge traditional festivities with internet savvy as it launches the “Vote for your Goat” application via the popular social media site – Facebook.com.
According to Director of Tourism, Division of Tourism and Transportation Warren Solomon, “The Vote for Your Goat” application seeks to take advantage of the humorous name of the programme and match it with the more technological and viral nature of social networking media. This is one of the many ways we will reach Tobago’s online tourism market, as the majority of travellers now research destinations and book tickets online.”
In a continued effort to tap into the internet and social media demographic, Dubai-based interactive advertising company Toucan (www.toucan.ae) has developed an application for the Dept. of Tourism in which Facebook fans can become virtual jockeys of the goats entered in this year’s races. The application boasts full profiles of all of the actual goats available, including information on their handlers, interests, history and personalities. This will allow a virtual jockey to make an informed choice when determining which goat seems like ‘the one’.
The winner will be determined by the amount of support that jockeys can muster in the form of “likes” on Facebook. Anyone can become a jockey, anyone can win. This initiative is expected to go viral, as the jockey who has mustered the most support will receive two tickets to Tobago from Caribbean Airlines from any of their gateways plus accommodation for four nights.
